Dr. Horace A. Judson assumed the seventh Presidency of Grambling State University on July 1, 2004.
Since that time, he has been actively engaged in leading the University in the reclamation of its legacy of excellence in teaching, learning, service and research. Dr. Judson has already begun the implementation of a strategic plan that will strengthen the University’s infrastructure while creating a student-centered, result-oriented environment more conducive to attaining the University’s mission.
Prior to coming to GSU, Dr. Judson served as President of Plattsburgh State University of New York for nearly a decade. He is also a former Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the College of Letters and Sciences at California State University in Stanislaus.
During a 17-year stint at Morgan State University, he served as Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dean and Associate Dean of the College of Science; Director and Associate Director of the College of Science Improvement Program; and Chair of the Chemistry Department.
Additionally, he is a former Senior Fellow at the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU). Lauded as “someone who can elevate the academic environment, grow research opportunities, raise philanthropic dollars, and represent the campus to external constituencies,” Dr. Judson has been credited with improving campus finances, diversity, retention and graduation rates, fundraising efforts and sponsored research during his tenure as a higher education administrator. He earned the doctoral degree in physical organic chemistry from Cornell University in New York and the A. B. degree in chemistry from Lincoln University in Pennsylvania.
Dr. Judson has made numerous presentations that addressed issues in higher education at various forums throughout the country. His past memberships and affiliations include the AASCU, American Council on Education (ACE), American Association of Higher Education (AAHE), International Association of University Presidents (IAUP), American Chemical Society, Sigma XI (Scientific Research Society), Kappa Delta Pi (Education), Phi Kappa Phi (Scholarship), Sigma Beta Delta (Business, Management and Administration) and AASCU.
He is listed in Who’s Who Among American Men and Women in Science, Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities, Who’s Who in the East and Who’s Who Among Black Americans.
Dr. Judson is married to Dr. Gail Shorter-Judson, and they are the parents of four daughters.
