  1. PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE

To ensure that GSU provide financial assistance to eligible students through employment programs. To accomplish this. objective the University makes available two employment programs, the Federal Work-Study Program (FWSP), and the University Wage Program (UWP). Student employment provides part-time employment in various University departments.

  1. STATEMENT OF POLICY

  1. FWSP is awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis to those applicants who demonstrate financial need and who meets the eligibility criteria.
     

  2. University Wages (UW) are awarded based on the availability of funds. UW may also be awarded to students who have been requested by departments. Students with financial need are eligible for wages only after they have exhausted all other means of financial assistance.
     

  3. During the Fall and Spring semesters, the student must enroll and maintain at least half-time status (6 hours). During the summer session, the student must maintain at least 3 credit hours.
     

  4. A student must have a valid social security to be considered for employment.
     

  5. A student employee must maintain satisfactory academic progress as defined by the University.
     

  6. A student may not work during scheduled class time, even if the class has been cancelled or dismissed for convocation.
     

  7. A student must not work concurrently under the FWSF, UWP or Graduate Assistantship Program (GAP), for more than one department simultaneously.
     

  8. A student employee cannot work in excess of 25 hours per week while classes are in session. During the time period between semesters, a student employee can work up to 40 hours per week. During periods of registration and prior to the start of classes, a student may be allowed to work up to 40 hours per week. A student employee may not be required to work more than eight hours in a given day.
     

  9. A student must not be permitted to work beyond the hours stated on his/her Student Employment Authorization List.
     

  10. All time sheets must be certified by the students and approved by their supervisors and the department heads. Supervisors must not certify time sheets for student employees. No time sheet will be processed for payment until it has been certified by the student.
     

  11. A student must work his/her hours within the approved time period. Funds not earned or hours not worked during the semester of the award cannot be earned during a subsequent semester.
     

  12. Student payrolls are processed at least once per month, and students are paid at least the federal minimum wage rate.
     

  13. All wages are subject to federal income taxes. The law requires that student employees complete a W -4 Form so that federal income tax may be withheld. A student must also complete the State Withholding Form (L-4) and the Employment Eligibility Verification (Form 1-9) before being employed.
     

  14. A student is not paid for absences such as vacation, disability , funeral, sick, jury duty , etc. However, these are considered excused absences.
     

  15. Students are encouraged to cash checks immediately.
     

  16. Employers may require a dress code when it reasonably and rationally relates to the purpose or function of the employing unit.
     

  17. A student employee may be terminated if his/her job performance is less than satisfactory .A student employee may be discharged for cause and will be given specific reason,  in writing, at the time of termination. A copy of the statement shall be kept on file by the employing unit and the Financial Aid Office. Causes for discharge shall include, but are not limited to: (1) recurring, unauthorized and unexcused absences; (2) refusal to do work assigned or refusal to work properly assigned time period; (3) falsifying entry of hours worked on time records; (4) violating the University Student Conduct of Code which occur in connection with student employment; (5) violating the University policy concerning the Privacy Act in giving out confidential information from student records.
     

  18. University policy discourages nepotism; students may not be employed in a unit where the mother, father, sister, brother or spouse works or has direct or indirect administrative responsibility.
     

  19. Any supervisor who violates the above-listed stipulations may be subject to disciplinary action and to the loss of departmental student employees.
