GSU strengthens mathematics to prepare for
reaffirmation of accreditation
GRAMBLING, La. -- A Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) is currently being developed by the Grambling State University (GSU) faculty to prepare for the university’s 2010 reaffirmation of accreditation.
GSU students will become stronger performers in mathematics and graduate better prepared to compete in the global economy. Titled The Improvement of Mathematical Skills and Knowledge, the QEP is an important part of GSU’s 2010 reaffirmation process because “it demonstrates a commitment on the University’s part to enhance the effectiveness of its academic programs,” said Dr. Robert Dixon, GSU Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.
GSU focused on mathematics after extensive research showed a critical need in that area. Surveys from faculty, staff, students, alumni, trustees and other university stakeholders also influenced the subject as the focus for academic improvement.
In April 2010, representatives from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) will visit the University to review the QEP and other aspects of the University involved in the reaffirmation process.
Dr. Parashu Sharma, QEP team leader, said the QEP will extend beyond its main focal point. “The QEP will be implemented not only through mathematics courses but also through other courses in the university’s general education program.”
Michelle Williams Young, director of the QEP, said that a team of faculty and staff has been working diligently on the project and that they are attempting to maximize participation and collaboration in the development of the plan.
“The goal of the QEP is to enhance student learning. It is important that we demonstrate, through the collection of the appropriate data, that student learning has, indeed, improved as a consequence of the QEP,” Young said.
Dr. Milford Greene, publicity chair for the QEP team, indicated that several activities have been planned to stress the importance of the QEP including radio appearances on KGRM-91.5 FM and a QEP Day at Grambling State University.
