GRAMBLING BASKETBALL ARENA WILL BE NAMED AFTER HOBDY
GRAMBLING----Grambling
State University athletes will now play in the Frederick C. Hobdy Arena
of the Assembly Center on GSU’s campus. The Board of Supervisors for
the University of Louisiana System approved the naming of the arena to honor
Grambling legend and Louisiana’s all-time winingest college basketball
coach Frederick C. Hobdy.
“Coach Hobdy touched so many lives through his work and mentoring. It is appropriate to honor him so future generations will know about his successes and dedication to Grambling,” said President Horace Judson.
A motion by Student Board Member and Grambling SGA President Steven Jackson and the Board’s unanimous vote came on the heels of an endorsement of the naming of the arena by Mrs. Mary Scott Hobdy, wife of the former coach.
Coach Hobdy had a career record at GSU of 567 wins and 287 losses. He won 10 conference championships, led the Tigers to 14 national tournaments, and in 1961, won the National Association of Inter-collegiate Athletics (NAIA) Championship title. He was named The Southwestern Athletic Conference Coach of the Year six times and NAIA Coach of the year once.
