GSU receives $1.5 million training grant

GRAMBLING----Grambling State University has been awarded a $1.5 million grant to provide training opportunities for students who are majoring in biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics or physics, who are under-represented in the biomedical sciences.

The grant is from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, National Institutes of health for a three-year period. The training will be under the auspices of the MARC program with the intention of improving student competitiveness for admission the Ph.D, M.D./Ph.D. or PharmD/Ph.D. degrees in biomedical sciences. The MARC program at GSU is one of the only two programs in Louisiana. The graduation rate of MARC students at GSU is 100% compared to 44% for minority students at state supported flagship institutions across the country. Thirty-one MARC and Pre-MARC graduates were accepted to Ph.D. programs in biomedical sciences at several research intensive institutions throughout the country.

MARC participants spend summer months at major research institutions throughout the country participating in research activities. MARC scholars receive tuition in addition to a stipend up to $22,128. Students present the finding of the research work during a national research conference held each year at different locations around the country.
