GSU Miss Cover Girl raises obesity awareness
GRAMBLING-----Annia Jenkins, Miss Cover Girl 2008-2009 at Grambling State University, will host an obesity awareness health fair from 1 p.m.-3 p.m. Thursday in front of the T. H. Harris Auditorium.
As part of her platform, Jenkins, a senior nursing major from Shreveport, said she would bring awareness to the growing obesity epidemic. "Overrule Obesity, Don't Let It Be Your Sentence" is the theme of her campaign.
"It is my intent to inform for my peers at school, Grambling State University employees and residents of the Grambling community about the seriousness of obesity and its impact in our community," Jenkins said.
Obesity is determined by a person’s Body Mass Index, or BMI, which compares a person’s weight and height (BMI = weight divided by height squared). A BMI number above 30 suggests that a person is obese. Obesity increases the risk of many diseases and health conditions which includes hypertension, Type 2 diabetes, stroke, coronary heart disease, sleep apnea and respiratory ailments.
The City of Grambling has proclaimed Thursday as Obesity Awareness Day. Health fair participants include members of the GSU Student Nurses Association; Terry Lily, university aerobics and fitness instructor; and Shreveport's aerobics guru, Patrick Mosely and Mosely's Movements.
The event is free of charge and open to the public. For more information, call (318) 422-6677 or 422-2534.
