The public is invited to attend a reception for the artist on November 19th from 4:30-6:00 pm. Gallery hours are from 8-4:30 M-F. Kevin Rhodes is a senior from Barstow, California. The major emphasis of Kevin’s work is portraiture.

At a young age, Kevin transitioned from coloring books and cartoon characters to still life and portraits. As an art major at Grambling, Kevin began to develop his interest in portraits. His portraits are inspired by people in his everyday life which include family, friends, and peers. Like artists throughout history Kevin has also produced many self-portraits. Some of the images that are featured in his senior show include faces of people he met while working at Camp Paivika, a summer camp located in the mountains of Southern California, for people who have a wide range of physical and mental disabilities. Portraits, for Kevin, are more than just capturing the subject’s likeness, but are also about portraying something of the subject’s personality or mood. His paintings are reflective of the diverse characteristics found in ordinary people, allowing Kevin to develop a deeper sense of who they are by painting them. For Kevin, the true aesthetic of art is revealed, when it speaks to him personally. Donna McGee, Head of the Art Department, states “I believe Kevin has exceptional potential as a portrait artist, and we hope that he will be able to further develop these skills in graduate school.”
