February 2008
When I arrived
on campus four years ago, we faced some monumental challenges that many
universities never have to encounter. Today I am particularly excited about
our future as we prepare to roll out our Comprehensive Master Development
Plan which addresses the overall look of our campus, including the way Grambling
State University uses its land, the arrangement of buildings, and the nature
and function of the landscape.
We began 2008 with the ground breaking of Phase II of Tiger Village, a new 800 bed residential complex for freshmen students. This new apartment style housing community initially opened in Fall 2007 with 1200 beds making residential life an important part of the total Grambling experience.
Grambling State University is steeped in traditions that have enhanced the lives of countless men and women over many decades of its existence. One such tradition is our annual football game known as the Bayou Classic. Following last year’s Classic, we held a black tie gala to kick-off the University’s first ever Capital Campaign with the goal of raising $30 million over a six year period.
GSU students were among the first to contribute to the campaign with their contribution of a $1 million scholarship endowment to forge sustained financial support for academic programs. Their endowment was made by a $500,000 contribution which will be matched dollar for dollar and used for need based scholarships. We are called upon to be leaders, and to do our very best to make a difference in the lives of others. I am grateful to be a part of the Grambling State University tradition and welcome those of you who want to be a part of it.
I am attaching a pledge form for you to complete by indicating your first pledge payment and mailing it to Grambling Black & Gold Foundation, c/o Division of Institutional Advancement, P.O. Box 587, Grambling, LA 71245.
Our shared vision for GSU is a grand one but no less than this great historic
institution deserves. We appreciate your past support and hope you will
give annually to this great University.
