Students interested in attending Grambling State University can submit an on-line application or print the Application for Admissions and mail required documents to the Office of Admissions. Applicants with Certificate of Achievement diplomas are not eligible for admission. Additionally, students with a General Equivalency Diploma (GED) are not eligible for admission to the university. Students with a GED are advised to attend a community college, and after successfully completing a two-year program of study to seek admission to the university as a transfer student.
All new freshman applicants must meet the criteria for admission. Admission
to the university is conditional until evidence of graduation from high
school and completion of required core units are received.
Admissions Criteria
In addition to the basic admission requirements, first-time freshman applicants must meet the admission criteria. Beginning the 2007-2008 school year, the admission criteria at Grambling State University changed. We have developed a transition plan that involves an incremental change from open admissions to selectivity during the period from fall 2007 to the fall 2010. The following criteria are effective for the 2008-2009 school year. (Please see the Phased-In Admission Criteria section below for the admission criteria for subsequent years).
Admissions Criteria – Fall 2008/Spring 2009
Completion of 15.5 High School core units, AND
High School GPA of 2.0 or above, OR
*Score 18 or above on ACT (860 SAT), AND
Require no more than two (2) remedial courses
*SAT scores will be converted to its ACT equivalent, using the combined Verbal (Critical Reading) and Math scores.
Phased-In Admissions Criteria (2007 – 2010)
Grambling State University has historically been an open-admission university, accepting all high school and GED graduates. The Board of Regents “Master Plan for Public Postsecondary Education” requires GSU to implement specific standards by 2010. Experience shows phasing in requirements makes the transition easier on students and the university.
Each year, from 2007 through 2010 the criteria will change. The tables below outline the specific criteria for fall 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010. Table I shows the criteria and Table II makes explicit the courses that must be taken and passed in high school.
