The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science has a long history of excellence. It attempts to give its majors and all others it serves a firm foundation in computation, comprehension, and logical reasoning. The Department revises and constantly updates the curricula in line with the mainstream Mathematics and Computer Science education in the nation, keeping in mind the University's uniqueness as a historically black university. The Department has about 200 majors and it graduates about thirty (30) students per year. The Department offers a Bachelor of Science (B. S.) degree in two major areas:

The following are some of the major accomplishments of this Department.

Computer Science Program at Grambling State University is accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission (CAC) of Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, Inc. (ABET), 111 Market Place, Suite 1050, Baltimore, MD 21202-4012 – telephone: 410-347-7700. The Computer Science Program was first accredited in 1997 by Computer Science Accreditation Commission (CSAC) of the Computing Sciences Accreditation Board, Inc. (CSAB).

Grambling State University has named Computer Science Program as one of the five “Areas of Excellence” as required by the University of Louisiana System. This is based on the faculty accomplishments in teaching and research, student accomplishments, external funds received by the Department and the program recognition by external agencies.

The Computer Science Program has been ranked number one of the top 100-Degree Producers of African American Baccalaureate Computer & Information Science Degrees as reported in July 9, 1998 issue of the Journal of Black Issues in Higher Education.

The major strength of the Department is its diversified faculty who has expertise in the areas such as computer science, pure and applied mathematics, statistics, and engineering.

The major research interests of the faculty are: Filtering Techniques to maximize the use of information, Datamining and Extraction of knowledge, Information Security, Artificial Intelligence based technologies and tools to solve real world problems of the new millennium, Integration of the processes of Software Engineering and Systems Engineering, Scientific Computing, Signal and Image Processing, Genetic Algorithms, Programming Languages for Computational Science and Engineering, Theory of Elasticity and Structural Mechanics, Numerical Heat Transfer, and Real and Complex Analysis.

Computer science graduates are holding high-ranking positions as vice-presidents at IBM, CISCO, TRW; and upper management positions at many other corporations and Government agencies.

In 1987, Computer Science program was described as a "jewel" program by the review committee appointed by Louisiana Board of Regents.

The combined publication record of the computer science faculty is over 150 in both national and international journals.

Over the last seven years, the Department has acquired grants close to $14M from federal, state, and private agencies. This includes the following four major grants: U. S. Army Research Office grant of $9.4M for a period of seven years (1995-2002) for Parallel and Distributed Evaluation, Visualization, and AI Reasoning to Advance Distributed Interactive Simulation Technology; Army Research Laboratory Cooperative Agreement to conduct research in Intelligent Agent Technology and Tools; High Performance Computing Modernization Program (HPCMP) to conduct research in Computational Technology Areas (CTAs) that are relevant to DoD, and a scholarship award of $494,204 from the National Science Foundation.

The Department has established a committed and long term partnerships with major corporations, government agencies, and academic institutions and increased the number of co-op and intern positions and career opportunities to our students.

Hewlett Packard has selected the Computer Science Program at GSU to partner with and establish a closer relationship to bring this program to national visibility. This partnership was established based on a national selection process that involved more than 200 computer science programs.

The graduates of our Department are being recruited by major corporations and government agencies with starting salaries in the range of $50,000 to $55,000 and we had till Spring 2001 100% career placement for our graduates.

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science has state-of-the-art equipment in the computer laboratories. There are total of six computer laboratories available for computer science and mathematics students/faculty use. The Department has acquired a variety of Software Packages. These include Linux Operating System, AIX Operating System, Solaris OS, Windows 2000 and XP, Visual Studio 6.0, Oracle 9I, MS SQL Server 2000, Java JDK, Java J++ 6.0, Adobe Acrobat 5.0, MS Office, Embarcadero Describe, MAT Lab, Mathematica, Minitab, and others. The Department is the member of Microsoft Digital Network Academic Alliance (MSDNAA). This alliance allows regular updates of the several Microsoft software packages. It allows the faculty members and the students to load selected software on their own computers. In the past, the department has been leasing software from IBM’s Higher Education Consortium resource, SGI Variety pack, and Microsoft’s Adoption program. In addition, the compilers for various programming languages and SAS statistical package are available on Alpha ES40 Server. Faculty offices are equipped with state-of-the-art Dell Desktops and Laser Printers.

The Department also maintains student chapter of Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) and Mathematics and Computer Science Club.

The Department currently offers scholarships to the students who are majoring either in computer science or mathematics, through the program funded by National Science Foundation under the auspices of Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics Scholarship Program.
