Behavioral Interventions to Reduce Health Disparity Risk in African Americans

Guest Speaker:
Dr. Robert L. Newton, Jr., Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology
Associate Professor
Pennington Biomedical Research Center
Baton Rouge, Louisiana

When: Thursday, September 20, 2018 – 9:30 am

Where: Grambling Hall Auditorium

Abstract of Presentation

Dr. Newton will highlight research results associated with several projects. These projects include Exercise Intervention to Reduce Risk of Alzhemer’s Disease in African Americans. This project is evaluating a physical activity program that was developed for elderly African Americans, specifically to examine cognitive function and brain function. Dr. Newton will also share the results of a study titled Using a Community-Favored Alternative Research Design to Study How Neighborhoods May Be Promoting Health Disparities. This study examined whether children who live in neighborhoods less supportive of physical activity, experience lower increases in physical activity when they participate in an intervention. Finally, Dr. Newton will highlight a smartphone app that was developed to deliver a physical activity maintenance program to African American Men.
