Director Mr. Edryn J. Coleman

Mr. Coleman is the new appointed Director of Choral Activities at Grambling State University!
It has always been his passion to teach choral music at an HBCU in order to maintain the rich heritage and traditions set forth by so many outstanding conductors that have come before him. It goes without saying that he is extremely excited for the opportunity to undertake this new adventure in music education and performance!

Mr. Coleman recently held the position of Instructional Specialist for Vocal and General Music in Prince Georges County, Maryland. In this position he had the pleasure of serving as a resource teacher to the Vocal & General Music teachers of the county. This included classroom observations, teaching demonstrations, and coordinating enrichment activities for teachers and students alike.

While in the classroom, Mr. Coleman was the director of choral activities at Hyattsville Middle School in Hyattsville, MD. His choirs consistently received “Superior” ratings at choral festivals and competitions. More importantly though, his choirs continued to receive the score of “I+” in sight-reading at the Middle School State Choral Festival. Obviously sight-reading played a vital role in his program from the very first rehearsal. His choirs have also served as demonstration choruses for the 2006 and 2007 MMEA State Conventions.

He is also a very active musician. For the past nine years he has worked with the elementary, middle, and high school honors choruses of Prince Georges County serving as accompanist, assistant director, and director. He has served as an adjudicator, clinician, and guest conductor for numerous counties across Maryland and Virginia. He is a member of the Heritage Signature Chorale and the Musical Director at Colesville United Methodist Church.

Mr. Coleman is a proud member of the American Choral Directors Association – Maryland/DC Chapter and the Maryland Choral Educators Association of MENC. He sits on the Executive Board for both of the mentioned organizations. While working with MCEA he holds positions as the President – Elect; a member of the Middle School Music Review Committee; the Site Manager for the Senior All-State Chorus Auditions at Dumbarton Middle School, and Chair for the State Solo and Ensemble Festival. While working with the Maryland/DC Chapter of ACDA he holds the position of Membership Chair.

He holds a Masters Degree in Music Education from The Florida State University; certification in Administration and Supervision from Coppin State University; and his undergraduate degree from Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Al. He is currently pursing a doctoral degree in Music Education from Shenandoah University in Winchester, VA
