DEPARTMENT: Department of History  

QUALIFICATIONS: The Department of History at Grambling State University seeks a specialist in African History, with experience teaching the world civilization survey, for a tenure-track appointment at the assistant professor level, beginning August 2009, contingent upon the availability of funding. A Ph.D. degree in History is required, or conferred by August 15, 2009. Active involvement with professional organizations and teaching experience at the university level are preferred. Evidence of grant writing, research and publication a plus. The preferred candidate must have a commitment to teaching and contributing to the successful development of majors in the department.  

RESPONSIBILITIES: The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Teach three sections of world civilization/western civilization from 10,000 BCE to 1650, History 101
  • Teach one upper level history course in his/her specialized field, perference given to nineteenth and twentieth century imperialism in Africa and post-colonial Africa
  • Advise students in the History major
  • Contribute in some fashion to the History Club and/or the local chapter of the Phi Alpha Theta, the History Honor Society
  • Serve on committees, as assigned by the Department Chair and the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences
  • Attend faculty meetings, convocations, and commencements, and to participate in other official University functions when requested
  • Perform other tasks assigned by the Department Head, Dean of the College/School, or Provost
  • Assist with providing leadership and counsel for the student organizations in the department
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 9 month-tenure track

SALARY: Salary is competitive with excellent benefits package.
