Entrance Counseling
Entrance Counseling must be conducted if you are receiving a Federal Subsidized or Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loan for the first time. Freshmen borrowing for the first time must wait 30 days after the first day of classes before their first disbursement is released to the school.
The entrance counseling session can be conducted in person or on-line. Go to http://www.mappingyourfuture.org, select Student Loan Counseling Interview and Stafford Entrance Counseling. The school will receive your Entrance Counseling confirmation electronically for sessions completed on the web. During the Entrance Counseling session, the following points will be emphasized:
- Explore all sources of financial aid
- Urge students to read and save all loan documents
- Describe consequences of multiple borrowing
- Review requirements for Satisfactory Academic Progress (when session
is conducted by Default Prevention
Specialist) - Explain the sale and servicing of student loans
- Remind students to keep lender informed
- Review terms and conditions of the loan
- Review the students rights and responsibilities
EXIT COUNSELING
Exit Counseling is required at the time of withdrawal from school, when a student’s enrollment falls below half-time, and prior to graduation. The exit counseling session can be conducted in person or on-line. Go to http://www.mappingyourfuture.org, select Student Loan Counseling Interview and Stafford Exit Counseling. The school will receive your Exit Counseling confirmation electronically for sessions completed on the web. During the Exit Counseling session, the following points will be emphasized:
- Data on average anticipated monthly repayment
- Name and address of borrower’s lender
- Borrower’s expected permanent address & borrower’s expected employer’s name and address
- Remind students to update the lender of any changes
- Review student loan deferments, forbearance, and cancellation
- Student Loan Repayment Options
- Student Loan Debt Management Strategies
