Dear Applicant,
The Department of Speech and Theatre is one of ten departments in the college of Liberal Arts at Grambling State University, which is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST). The mission of the Department of Speech and Theatre thoroughly prepares its students for effective living in a highly advanced technological world. Toward this overall goal, the department provides the experience of varied classes that expose students to incremental learning; the total acquisition of knowledge, which completes the Speech and Theatre canon, and prepares the graduates holistically. Department goals also include aesthetic exposure for the public, educating the masses, and strengthening the program through recognition of the impact of the local citizenry upon the department by their inclusion of consultation and action.
The mission adheres to the objectives of the overall institution. Faculty and administration in this department strive to nurture the student as he/she matures into a technical, social, philosophically sound and logically reasoning citizen; and as much as resources allow, the department will always echo the university’s pledge to service.
The department offers the Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre, The Bachelor of Science degree in Communication and Theatre Education and The Bachelor of Science degree in Speech Pathology. A minor is offered in Deaf Education for those persons who are interested in working with persons with hearing deficiency.
The Speech and Theatre department has a qualified faculty and staff to provide the kind of training students will need to qualify for employment and for graduate studies. Students in the department are involved in all activities through the Floyd L. Sandle Players, The Speech Pathology Club, and the Definitely Heard Club. In the department, the students have the opportunity to participate in the Inter-collegiate Debate team and Theatre productions. Often, the group tours productions throughout the state of Louisiana to provide cultural entertainment to selected communities. These activities also provide hands on experience for students in Theatre.
Departmental scholarships are available for those persons who meet the qualifications and who wish to pursue a career in one of the areas in the department. If you wish to earn a Theatre degree and get first hand theatrical experience in clinical practice, Grambling State University is the place for you.
Truly Yours,
Head, Department of Speech and Theatre
