GRAMBLING, LA – Grambling State University held a press conference Monday morning to announce their first Beacon Award honorees. The honorees will be recognized at the Port City Gala to be held on Friday evening, September 2 at the Shreveport Convention Center at 7:00 p.m. The Beacon Award will be presented to individuals and organizations that are committed to good character and upholding high ethical standards. In addition to being dedicated to philanthropy and humanitarianism, the honoree has excelled by making uniquely substantial contributions to society and/or Grambling State University in their nominated category.
The following persons, companies, and organizations will be the first to receive the university’s highest non-academic award of honor: Athletics: Mr. Willie D. Davis, President and CEO, All Pro Broadcasting, Inc.; Business and Industry: Small Business – Briggs Field Services (Mr. Kerry J. Briggs, CEO), Large Business – Griggs Enterprises (Mr. Roy Griggs, President), Individual – Mr. Jim K. Elrod, President/CEO, Willis-Knighton Health Systems; Community Service: Individual: Attorney Christian C. Creed, Organization – Carolyn W. and Charles T. Beaird Foundation; Community Development/Civil Rights: Dr. Charles T. Beaird (Posthumous), Rev.Dr. Ernest Edward Jones, Sr., Pastor, Galilee Missionary Baptist Church; Education: Mr. James Henderson, Chancellor, Bossier Parish Community College, and Public Service: U.S. Senator Mary L. Landrieu.

Port City Classic is a tradition but the addition of the gala preceding the game is another opportunity to bring Gramblinites together in the Shreveport-Bossier City area.
