GSU Police Department launches innovative crime-fighting plan
GRAMBLING – The Grambling State University Police Department has introduced an innovative crime-fighting campaign that enlists students, staff, faculty and the Grambling community to report any suspicious activity or behavior on campus.
The campaign, called “See Something, Say Something,” has been successful in other parts of the country, and Police Chief Craig A. Nance believes it will be just as effective at GSU.
"Everyone can help prevent crime by being aware of his or her surroundings and the behavior of others,” Nance said. “If you see something, say something. Alert a police officer, supervisor or university official.”
The campaign encourages individuals to dial one of several numbers and take action if they observe any of the following circumstances:
- Someone behaving in a way that concerns you.
- Unattended items or packages.
- People in bulky or inappropriate clothing.
- Exposed wiring or other environmental hazards.
- Persons loitering around non-public areas or in areas in which they have no apparent legitimate purpose.
- Suspicious vehicles parked in unusual places or at unusual times.
A list of numbers and an email address associated with the campaign are included below:
- To report life-threatening emergencies on campus, dial 9911.
- To report a safety concern, dial (318) 274-2222.
- To report any of the above, text 318-557-6882 or email police@gram.edu.
The “See Something, Say Something” campaign was developed by the New York Transit System in 2002 to involve the public in the fight against terrorism by encouraging people to be alert and to report suspicious activity.
Since 2002, the program has been adopted by a number of other agencies such as the Ohio Department of Homeland Security and Harvard University, which uses the program as part of its crime prevention efforts. For more information about the program, contact GSU Police Chief Craig A. Nance, (318) 274-3832, email: police@gram.edu.
