Letter to GSU Community from Dr. Frank G. Pogue

Office of the President

January 28, 2010

Dear GSU Community:

On January 12, 2010, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake devastated Haiti, killing an estimated 200,000 people and injuring thousands more, destroying homes, hospitals, schools and businesses, and creating shortages of food, clothing, water and medical supplies. In addition, recent aftershocks have added to the burden felt by those struggling daily to care for themselves and their loved ones.

In light of this catastrophe, I have appointed a GSU Haiti Relief Task Force to coordinate our community-wide efforts in coming to the aid of our brothers and sisters in Haiti. I have asked Dr. Kenoye Eke, Executive Assistant to the President, to spearhead the effort. The Task Force recognizes that several student organizations, GSU personnel and community partners have already begun efforts to either raise funds or collect other donations. Thus, we invite all campus groups and community partners engaged in donation drives for Haiti to inform the Task Force of their activities in order to enhance coordination and increase campus awareness of the various initiatives. Please report your current efforts to Mrs. Gloria George at 274-6432 or arnoldg@gram.edu by Friday, February 5, 2010. Expect to receive announcements of the GSU community efforts relative to Haiti over the next few weeks.

Meanwhile, I want to announce that on Tuesday, February 9th, the GSU community will engage in the "A Day of Sacrifice and Awareness for Haiti" campaign. On this day, we are asking every member of the GSU community - faculty, staff, students, coaches, community members and alumni - to sacrifice the cost of one day's lunch to contribute to the Haiti Relief effort at GSU. Although it might not sound like much, be assured that if everyone gives, the impact will be tremendous. Additional information regarding "A Day of Sacrifice and Awareness for Haiti" is forthcoming.

It is our hope that you will join us in reaching out across the sea to our brothers and sisters in Haiti, extending the borders of this community to demonstrate the true bonds of unity and community. Regardless the size of your individual donation, many lives will be saved and suffering minimized through our combined efforts.

We look forward to your contribution to this community-wide effort.

Sincerely,

Frank G. Pogue, Ph.D.
Interim President
