Guest Artist, Charles Huntley Nelson, Jr., at GSU

GRAMBLING – The artwork of Charles H. Nelson, Jr., an assistant professor of art at Morehouse College, is now on display at Grambling State University’s Dunbar Art Gallery through March 5.

Nelson, who holds a bachelor's idegree n fine arts from Washington University and a master’s degree in fine arts from Howard University will also present a lecture from 11 a.m. to noon on March 5 in Woodson Hall, Room 10, as the opening event in the Spring Celebration of the Arts. The lecture will be followed by a reception from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in Dunbar Hall. Both events are open to the public.

A participant in both national and international exhibitions -- including a cultural exchange in South Africa, Step Afrika! --Nelson’s work has been reviewed in prestigious publications such as Art Papers Magazine, ARTnews Magazine, NKA: Journal of Contemporary African Art and Upscale Magazine.

“This is an exciting exhibition for the department of art, as the artwork being shared is designed with public in mind,” said department head Donna McGee.

The primary focus of the work utilizes digital techniques to merge various sources including drawings, photo and film. As such, an opportunity is created for critical discussion concerning contemporary art with the Grambling community. English, philosophy, history and art(s) students are encouraged to participate in dialog related to the work.

Dunbar Gallery is located in Dunbar Hall on Hutchinson Street. Gallery hours are from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Accommodations are available for large groups and people with special needs. For more information or special arrangements please call the department of art at 318-274-2274. You may also contact Drék Davis or Tommie Sue Slaughter at (318) 274-3414; davisro@gram.edu.
