Basketball teams, GSU have big weekend in store

GRAMBLING, La. – Grambling State University basketball fans have a big weekend in store, as both the men’s and women’s teams will host Prairie View A&M on Saturday and then take on Texas Southern on Monday – a game that will be nationally televised on ESPNU.

The university has scheduled a plethora of activities during the games, including a breast cancer awareness fundraiser in conjunction with the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), activities for children and a contest that rewards community organizations with the highest number of game attendees.

For Saturday’s game, the first 500 fans into the GSU Assembly Center will receive a free ice cream novelty from Blue Bell Creameries in Ruston.

Breast cancer awareness

The Grambling women’s basketball team along with the Grambling Sports Radio Network will join in the fight against breast cancer as part of the national WBCA’s Pink Zone campaign on Saturday and Monday. “A Change for a Cure” jar will be on the premises for breast cancer supporters to donate loose change on both nights. In addition, a breast cancer hall of honor will be established where individuals can make commemorative bags to remember someone that has fought or is currently fighting breast cancer.

“We are honored to partner with the WBCA in the fight against breast cancer,” said Sharon Perkins, associate athletic director, Intercollegiate Athletics.

Groups, churches, and organizations from around the community are invited to compete in the "Show for Dough" competition on Monday. The group that has the most members come out to the game from the campus and the community on Monday will win a cash prize.

Also on Monday, fans can also root for tiger basketball teams to score 60 points or more. If that happens, everyone in the arena will receive a buy-one-get-one-free coupon from Raising Cane’s. For ticket information, call 318-274-2625.
