GSU police event to highlight domestic violence, personal crime awareness

GRAMBLING, La. -- Grambling State University students and the community can gain knowledge about domestic violence and sexual abuse from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at a “Personal Crime Against Persons” seminar in the T.H. Harris Auditorium.

The event is sponsored by the GSU Police Department, KGRM-FM, various student organizations and local agencies that help those who have suffered from domestic abuse and sexual assault.

“I think just having more people know about the issue of domestic violence will help,” said Eletha Murray, director of the New Era Center for Women in Monroe, a survivor of domestic violence and an event participant. “My hope is that victims will understand that they are not alone, and that people who are actually not victims will understand what domestic violence is.”

Speakers from the Domestic Abuse Resistance Team, or DART, in Ruston, will present seminars from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. and from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Speakers from the Pine Hills Sexual Assault Advocacy Center in Ruston will present seminars from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. and from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Plate lunches will be sold for $3, and all proceeds will benefit DART and Pine Hills Advocacy Center.

For more information, please contact Cpl. Michelle Buckhalter at the GSU Police Department at (318) 274-2222.
