GSU gets grant
GRAMBLING-----Grambling State University has
received a grant from The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program
through the U. S. Department of Justice. The grant totaling $84, 963, will
enhance local justice systems and provide for national support efforts.
The grant was announced by one of its major supporters, U.S. Senator (D-La.)
Mary Landrieu. "The Edward Byrne Justice Grant serves a critical purpose
in communities across our state and the country, providing funding to support
our law enforcement officers in all of their crucial missions," Sen.
Landrieu said.
"This grant will be used to strengthen our student and faculty training
in the forensic chemistry program," remarked Dr. Robert Dixon, Provost
and Vice-President of Academic Affairs. The funding will enable the program
to purchase additional equipment and supplies. The forensic chemistry concentration
area was established in 2004 in the Department of Chemistry "We are
pleased to receive the award as we work to enhance education and training
for the students in the field of forensic science," said Dr. Danny
Hubbard, head of the GSU Chemistry Department.
Every year, Byrne dollars fund more than 4,000 police officers and prosecutors
working on more than 750 drug enforcement task forces across hundreds of
urban and rural counties, parishes and cities in all 50 states.
This funding has led to more than 22,000 arrests, 54,000 weapons seized,
5.5 million grams of methamphetamine seized and the breakup of almost 900
methampphetamine labs annually.
