GRAMBLING, LA – Students from eight area high schools competed in GSU’s North Louisiana High School Art Show.
The winner of the art competition is Madison Mitchell, a student at Sterlington High School. She received the Best of Show award for her painting of a Louisiana swamp scene entitled “Louisiana Living”.
“It was so expressive. The color was clean. The composition was good, and it just jumped out at you,” said Tommie Sue Slaughter, a former assistant professor of art who judged the art competition.
In addition to “Louisiana Living,” Donna McGee, director of Dunbar Gallery, was especially impressed by two other entries. Jeremy Curry, a student at Gibsland-Coleman Complex, won first place in Color Media for his depiction of LeBron James.
“It was his interpretation of a photo of LeBron James. I thought that he did capture his personality well,” McGee said.
Another entry of interest was Nathaniel Doyle’s drawing. Doyle, a student at Wossman High School, received first place in Black and White Media for his “Portrait of Tamaya”.
“The technical skill and use of the pencil is very delicate and refined and very well done. He’s working from a photograph, but it’s very nicely done how he captured that person’s personality,” McGee said.
Other winners include:

- Diamonique Williams, Wossman High School, 3rd Place, Color Media
