GSU’s MSW Student Selected Student of the Year by NASW-LA

Tiffany Williams, MSW Student Selected Student of the Year by NASW-LATiffany Williams has been selected by the National Association of Social Workers-LA (NASW-LA) as the 2015 MSW Student of the Year for the State of Louisiana. After competing with candidates from other schools of social work within the state, the student is recognized by NASW-LA during a luncheon celebration at its annual conference in Baton Rouge. This year, the annual conference was held March 18 thru March 20, during National Social Work Month.

Students must be nominated by their respected masters of social work program. One MSW student is chosen by NASW-LA for the honor based on grade point average, contributions to their university and/or program, and contributions to the community. Ms. Williams has proven to be a “standout” because of her accomplishments. She is a second-year student in the MSW Program and MSW candidate for graduation in May 2015. Ms. Williams has maintained a 3.8 GPA during her matriculation in the School of Social Work and has proven herself to be a leader among her cohorts. During her foundation-year, she assumed a leadership role for the annual MSW students’ foundation-year program during Black History Month. She was later selected president of the MSW Student Organization for academic year 2014 – 2015. Additionally, under her leadership, special outreach and services were provided to older adults in the community. Ms. Williams is currently completing her social work internship at the VA Medical Center in Shreveport.

It is interesting to note that Ms. Williams’ leadership abilities and service to the community and the country began long before she entered the MSW Program. In 2005, she served her country by joining the Louisiana Army National Guard and was deployed to Iraq from May 2009 until May 2010. After a year in Iraq, she returned to the Louisiana Army National Guard. However, after enrolling in the MSW Program for the fall 2013 semester, she left the Guard during her first year in the MSW Program in order to devote maximum time to her studies, without interruptions for duty. Ms. Williams reports that she will reenlist for active duty with the National Guard shortly after graduation. The American public will be forever grateful for her sacrifice and service.
