Office of the President
Letter to Donors
September 17, 2012
I am sure that you are aware of the many changes that are currently occurring with regard to financing higher education in the State of Louisiana. Over the past three years, the university’s state appropriation has been drastically reduced from $31.6 million to $16.5 million. In essence, the university is operating on an annual budget that is lower than the operational budget ten years ago. These budget cuts come at a time when the State of Louisiana has mandated annual increases in college admission standards for high school graduates, annual increases in tuition, new state mandated performance measures focused on student retention and graduation rates, and an overall economy that has led to excessive unemployment. These developments negatively impact the university’s ability to fulfill its historic mission of providing exceptional opportunities for underserved citizens, many of whom are African Americans.
Despite the current budget shortfall and the anticipation of additional cuts during the 2012-2013 academic year, Grambling State University continues its commitment to educate our students and provide them with state of the art technology and resources. We are focused on maintaining and increasing academic excellence through quality classroom and online instruction. Moreover, we have strengthened our recruitment efforts across the country and are working towards establishing a stronger scholarship endowment that will promote retention and graduation. However, we need the help of our supporters.
I am making a direct appeal to you and requesting that all Gramblinites support our university by pledging to donate $1,000 over the next year (Homecoming 2012-Homecoming 2013). Your donation will help us promote academic excellence at Grambling State University through recruitment, retention, and graduation. Your contribution will also position the university to announce a national capital campaign. Can I count on you to help keep the spirit of excellence alive at Grambling?
Please make your payment directly to Grambling State University to ensure that the university receives your personal contribution. You may contact Ms. Brenda Williams in the Office of Institutional Advancement if you have any questions or need additional information, at 318-274-6032 or email@example.com. Please be assured that the university will acknowledge your contribution and ensure that it is used for the purpose you have identified. All alumni donors will be listed on the university’s website.
