The benefits of the athletic certification to institutions are
self-awareness, affirmation, and opportunities to improve.
What are the three areas certification addresses?
The Operating Principles/Standards addresses the areas of governance and
commitment to rules compliance; academic integrity; commitment to equity
and student-athlete welfare.
How does GSU benefit from athletics certification?
GSU will benefit by increasing campus-wide awareness and knowledge of the
athletics program, confirming its strengths and developing plans to improve
areas of concern.
What is GSU's certification status?
GSU completed its first cycle certification self-study in 1998 and was certified.
GSU is currently conducting its second cycle-NCAA Certification Self-Study.
The process begin in the fall of 2006 with the institution launching a review
of Intercollegiate Athletics.
What is the Certification Steering Committee and what is its role?
The Certification Steering Committee is chaired by Dr. Obadiah Simmons.
Members of the committee include university faculty and staff, athletics
department personnel and community volunteers.
How was the Certification Steering Committee selected?
The Certification Steering Committee was selected with broad-based participation
in mind. All divisions of the University are represented on the committee.
They include community members/alumnus and conference involvement.
What are the three subcommittees and what are their roles?
The three subcommittees are Academic Integrity; Governance and Commitment
to Rules Compliance; and Equity and Student-Athlete Welfare. Each subcommittee
is chaired by a member of the Steering committee. It is the subcommittees’
responsibility for collecting information and writing the draft report for
assigned area.
What is GSU's process and progress?
The process is well underway. Steering Committee Members and Subcommittee
have been selected and are posted on the website. The final report will
be submitted to the NCAA national office upon completion.
How will information on the certification process and findings
be disseminated to internal and external audiences?
Presentations will be made to various campus groups about the certification
process, its origins and importance, some of the findings and plans for
improvement.
A forum will bescheduled to provide information to faculty, staff, students and community groups.
The Steering Committee will review all feedback received from the meetings and via this website, and make changes to the self-study report and plans for improvement as necessary before the entire document is finalized.
What is the certification timeline?
Submission date of the self-study report is due by May 1, 2007. The NCAA
staff liaison will then review the report for preliminary issues. A peer
review team will visit our campus on September 30 - October 2, 2007. The
Committee on Athletics Certification makes the final certification decision.
A decision will be sent to GSU’s President, Horace A. Judson.
What is the role of the Peer Review Team?
The responsibilities of the Peer Review Team are to verify Accuracy of the
self-study; verify broad-based participation; and evaluate conformity with
the operating principles.
