If a medical emergency occurs from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday - Friday, the Student Residence Houseparent will call University Police and transport the student to Foster-Johnson Health Center.
If a medical emergency occurs at any other time; the Student Residence Houseparent will call University Police and have the student transported to Lincoln General Hospital.
Contact the following as soon as you are able:

Call the Department of Housing/Residential Life ( 274-2504).
If an emergency will require a person to be admitted into the hospital, do the following:

Verify a medical history.

Get student's home phone number and address.
In the event a tornado is reported or sighted, all persons within the University's
Halls should move to a safe area. Action should be taken to prevent personal
injury from falling objects or flying debris. Building basements, inner
hallways, enclosed stairwells or lobbies (without glass) are suggested areas
of safety. Persons living in residence halls are instructed to go to the
following areas.:
Jones, Wheatley, and Pinchback:
*8th floor residents, move down the stairwell to the 4th floor hallways with occupants on the 4th floor.
*7th floor residents, move down the stairwell to the 3rd floor hallways with occupants on the 3rd floor.
*6th floor residents, move down the stairwell to the 2nd floor hallways with occupants on the 2nd floor.
*1st floor residents, move to the 1st floor hallways.

If you receive a bomb threat or any other type of threatening telephone call, you should remember the following:

Remain "calm".

Attempt to identify background noise such as traffic sounds, machinery running or vehicle backfire.

Call University Police at extension 2219 or 2222 (if needed), and the Department of Housing/Residential Life at extension 2504. University Police will call the FIRE DEPARTMENT at 247-6410 (if needed).
Fire extinguishers are located on each floor of the residence halls. The type of fire extinguishers that are in use in the residence halls is Class ABC. Class ABC fire extinguisher may be used on the following:
Trash, wood and paper
Liquids and grease
Electrical equipment
In order to use a Class ABC fire extinguisher do the following:
-
pull the pin, hold unit up-right, free hose, stand back 8 feet;
-
aim the extinguisher nozzle core at the base of the fire;
-
squeeze the lever and sweep side to side.
-
Always leave yourself an escape avenue.
If someone is found to be intoxicated, call University Police, and be prepared to give the following information:
-
your name and position
-
nature of the emergency
-
location of the person
-
number of people involved
DO NOT:
-
give the person any type of medication
-
walk, run or exercise the person
-
give the person a cold shower
-
give the person any liquid
-
attempt to control the person
DO:
-
keep the person comfortable until University Police arrive;
-
place a garbage bag in a can next to the person so he/she may vomit if necessary;

check the person periodically to monitor breathing

contact the Department of Housing/Residential Life
Call the Counseling Center Monday - Friday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. for anyone that you feel may be experiencing a mental juncture at (274-6347)
During all other times, call University Police at 274-2219 or 2222.
DeathIn the event a student or non student is found dead in the residence hall, you should:

call University Police at 274-2219 or 2222

Do not attempt to contact/notify the resident's family nor the news media.
The Vice President for Student Affairs will notify the family or news media.
The Student Residence Houseparent along with the resident's roommate will pack the deceased personal belongings and make arrangements for the parents/guardians of the deceased to pick up the personal items in the residence hall.
