Grammy Nominated, Musiq Soulchild to Headline Grambling State’s Bayou Classic Fundraiser

GRAMBLING, LA – September 17, 2019 – Today, Grambling State University announced that its Bring it Home 2019 Campaign finale will feature Grammy Award winner Musiq Soulchild as it celebrates the close of its $1 million campaign at 8 p.m. on November 29. 

“For the past two years, we’ve beat our million-dollar goal and raised over $2.5 million to support our campus and students,” said President Rick Gallot. “That’s worth celebrating. So, for year three we are stepping up our thank you to donors with our special guests, Musiq and DJ Jubilee, and a few big surprises.”

The University is inviting more than 300 donors and guests to the Hilton Riverside Hotel in New Orleans for the special celebration.

In addition to headline performer Musiq Soulchild, this year’s event will feature dinner, a silent auction, awards presentation, and special giveaways sponsored by adidas, the Grambling University Foundation and the Grambling State University Office of Advancement.  

“The ball will be a special opportunity for us at Grambling State to celebrate our growth and legacy of extraordinary thinkers, doers, and investors as a part of the Bayou Classic,” said Marc Newman, the University’s Vice President for Advancement, Research, and Economic Development.

About Musiq Soulchild 
Musiq Soulchild is a hip-hop soul artist that was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He built a reputation for being musically gifted, beatboxing for MC’s, freestyling on the open mic circuit or just performing a cappella for strangers on the streets. 

Deeply inspired by the R&B/Soul sound of the ‘70s, he uses the name “Soulchild” as a way to show respect and admiration to his biggest musical influences such as Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway, Marvin Gaye, and many others. In April 2016 he released his 7th studio album entitled “Life On Earth” leading with the new hit single “I Do”. The album peaked at #2 on Billboard R&B album charts and # 3 on the Top Hip-Hop R&B album charts. He has received awards from Billboard, BET, ASCAP, BMI, and Soul Train. He has also earned award nominations from MTV, the American Music Awards, the NAACP, and 12 Grammy nominations. 

 

About DJ Jubilee 
DJ Jubilee is a leader of the New Orleans bounce movement and stands for all things New Orleans. From call and response jams like “Get It Ready” and “Back That Thang Up” to his newest hit “GitOnDaFlur”, DJ Jubilee is the indisputable king of bounce. 

Born Jerome Temple and long-time Special Education teacher at a local high school, Jubilee was discovered by area producers Earl J. Mackie and Henry F. Holden while performing at a school dance. He soon signed to their Take Fo’ Records label. DJ Jubilee’s debut cassette, Stop Pause, appeared in 1995, followed later that same year by the full-length DJ Jubilee & Cartoon Drew. After returning in 1996 with 20 Years in the Jets, he issued Take It to the St. Thomas two years later.
