Founder’s Week Offers Virtual Opportunities to Honor University’s History

Grambling Graduate, Las Vegas Commissioner to Deliver Keynote Address  

GSU Founder's Week 2020 Announcement ImageGRAMBLING, LA — September 16, 2020 – Today, Grambling State University announced a series of Founder’s Week events that will honor the University’s influential leaders and its 119-year history.

The week’s events, themed Building What’s Next, will include a series of ceremonies, service opportunities, and education events for students, campus, and its communities.

“Founder’s Week is an important opportunity to connect our students with our world-changing legacy and the leaders who helped make us a global impact center and brand,” said President Rick Gallot.

Founders Week Events include: 

Monday, September 21, 2020
7:30 a.m. Official Opening of Founder’s Week Ceremony The Founder’s Bust (eastside of Lee Hall)

Noon – 1:00 p.m. Founder’s Week Community Activity – Pull-Up Picnic | Eddie G. Robinson Stadium – Gate 1

*Must go online and fill-out form for free meal and souvenir at https://rebrand.ly/founderspicnic  

The first 250 persons to fill out the form will receive meals. 

**Mask must be worn**

The Tour Video can be viewed on the Jumbotron via the entrance at Gate 1 with social distancing taking place. SodexoMagic employees will disseminate the lunches to those not wanting to leave their vehicles.

Other Activities:

FYE (First Year Experience) students will participate in Founder’s Week during their scheduled FYE class times. They will view the Founder’s Day Virtual Tour Video and are required to write an essay after viewing the video. The following class schedule will be observed on the day of the virtual convocation. All afternoon courses will resume the regular class schedule.

About Commissioner Weekly

Commissioner Lawrence Weekly is the Vice-Chairman of the Clark County Commission Board and was the first African American to chair the Las Vegas Convention & Visitors’ Authority. He also sits as chairman of the Board of Trustees for University Medical Center Southern Nevada (UMC), Western Regional Rep for the National Association of Black County Officials (NABCO), Nevada Association of Counties (NACO), and the Clark County Liquor & Gaming Licensing Board, and the Local Law Enforcement Advisory Board that awards millions to valley-wide programs dedicated to improving the quality of life for families in Clark County. Additionally, the commissioner is a member of the Family and Juvenile Justice Services Policy and Fiscal Affairs Board, Southern Nevada Regional Planning Coalition, and the Springs Preserve Board of Trustees for the Southern Nevada Water Authority. Commissioner Weekly is a native Nevadan and graduate of Western High School. He attended Grambling State University where he earned a bachelor’s in Communication. He holds a master’s in Public Administration from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and teaches public policy at UNLV.

He also is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and is a founder of the Kappa Alpha Psi Leadership League for aspiring young black men in high school and a founder of Camp Brotherhood which affords inner-city youth an opportunity to attend camp at Mt. Charleston each year at the close of the academic year.
