There are a number of reasons why students should consider enrolling in summer classes, including advancing in their academic studies, said Dr. Rudolph Ellis, director of the Office of Retention.

“I value student success and whichever way students can succeed and graduate on time is definitely a go in my book,” he said.

Ellis provided the following reasons why students should consider summer classes:

Allows you to get core courses out of the way
You have to take common courses that may be prerequisites directly related to your major or general education subjects. Taking these mandatory classes in a summer session clears the way for you to register for more advanced courses in the fall and spring that are directly related to your major.

You can catch up on credits
A summer session can offer a do-over if you need to retake a class. If you have fallen behind on credits during the year, it’s a great way to make up the work and stay on track for earning your degree on time.

You might get into in-demand classes more easily
Whether the draw is the subject, a great professor, or both, some classes are more popular than others. It might be tough to enroll in these courses during the regular academic year. With less competition during the summer session, you have a better chance at getting a spot in  highly coveted classes.

Allows you to move through classes you might dread more quickly
Summer classes are typically shorter in duration than spring and fall courses. However, that short timeframe probably means the material is more concentrated, so you might have to work harder at a faster pace.

You can enjoy smaller class sizes
Fewer students enroll in summer sessions, so your classes should allow you to better connect with peers and professors.

You will likely have fewer distractions and better focus
You may thrive in summer sessions because you can concentrate more easily. Without having to juggle homework and deadlines from multiple classes, extracurricular activities and maybe a job, it’s easier to focus and retain material better.

You could graduate early
Attending summer classes can help you shave a semester off your degree program and allow you to graduate early. This is helpful if you have a job lined up or want to get into graduate school.  It also might demonstrate your drive, self-discipline, and motivation to excel to prospective employers.
