Grambling State leaders reflect on successful Homecoming celebration

Grambling, La. – November 6, 2022 – Even a brief line of storms that hit campus late Friday night into early Saturday morning didn’t dampen what Grambling State University officials called an all-around winning week of Homecoming festivities.

GSU defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff 36-10 in the football game, but that was a small part of what university administrators feel was a successful week of festivities with safety as the priority.

“This week and weekend went well. I’m pleased with GSUPD, faculty, students, and staff,” said Grambling State Police Chief Rodney Demery. “We [still] have work to do and will continue to educate our campus community and visitors on enjoying Homecoming responsibly.”

“ I’m really pleased with the department’s performance with the help of numerous law enforcement agencies from around the region. They all showed up, which is a testament to the strength of collaboration. We are better together.”

Grambling State President Rick Gallot agreed with Demery’s assessment of Homecoming week and shared his gratitude for visitors remaining amenable to the measures that were put in place for a safe experience.

“The feedback I received was overwhelmingly positive,” said Gallot. “Alumni, students, and other attendees appreciated the enhanced safety measures in place this year.”

Favrot Student Union Board (FSUB) President Taylor Coleman-Savannah expressed her appreciation to fellow students for making Homecoming 2022 a success.

“On behalf of the Favrot Student Union Board, we would want to say thank you to our student body,” Coleman-Savannah said. “We understand that Homecoming in ‘The G’ took a different route this year but the end result was well worth it. As students, we all want to have the freedom and privilege to embrace the traditions of Homecoming, but as student leaders, we are grateful for all the measures that were put into place to ensure the safety of our students and our campus.”

“We are thrilled that everyone enjoyed the festivities coordinated by the Favrot Student Union Board,” Coleman-Savannah said. “From the YardFest in the middle of Main street to the Pep Rally cheering on the G-Men, and the amazing talent at the Gospel Fest, Comedy Show, and Concert, this year’s celebration was full of meaningful memories. I look forward to next year and eventually returning to enjoy them as an alumnus.”

Student Government Association President Ja’Quel Brooks thanked fellow students as well as alumni who returned to campus for Homecoming.

“The 2022 Homecoming was an experience that was hard to describe,” Brooks said. “The ability that FSUB has to fluently execute to make this campus the most enjoyable for the students brings joy to my heart daily. Even with alumni from all over coming to pour knowledge into us throughout our matriculation, this homecoming was truly all about Grambling [State].”
