University College Staff/Team 2024 Group PhotoUniversity College is comprised of a Director, Program Liaison and Program Assistants Academic Advisors who specialize in different program areas. The Director along with advisors will offer course seminar-based instruction that will guide the student through the first and second year of college. The University College is staffed by faculty dedicated to the success of the first-year college student. The services provided by the University College Program are designed to support the academic success and retention efforts at Grambling State University. The GAP is comprised of an orientation for new and transitional students, academic advisement and counseling, and seminar-based instruction that will guide the student through the first year of college.

MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the University College is to ensure that first- time, first- year students’ experience a smooth transition from high school to college by providing foundational information that will support and enhance their matriculation from the first-year through graduation. In addition, it also seeks to assure a successful transition of second-year students, to the point that they become successful during their college matriculation.  Furthermore, by promoting the mission of the University as a whole, University College will create a learning environment that fosters academic commitment, civic and community responsibility, school pride, and lifelong learning. The vision for success is to develop and establish a University College that will foster student success, support academic excellence and instill a historical comprehensive college experience.

GOALS & OBJECTIVES

University College Group PhotoThe goals of the program are to (1) provide historical milestones about Grambling State University; (2) introduce the entering students to the University’s academic programs, general education requirements, student handbook, University catalog, financial aid and registration processes, and University policies and procedures;(3) provide survival skills such as goal setting; time management; learning styles, career personality assessment, and active learning; critical thinking; listening, note-taking, and class participation; reading to remember; test-taking skills, writing and speaking for success; service learning; and research in the college library; and (4) through the use of Canvas, this will allow us to monitor grades and attendance for our students. The University College will aid the University in meeting the ability to teach, retain and graduate any student at the level of education they possess when entering into Grambling State University.  This supports the University with the vision of Grambling State University President, Richard J. Gallot. Listed are the objectives of the University College:

Objective 1: 75% of First-Time |Full-Time Freshman and Transfer students with (29) credit hours or less who participate in Target the effective academic advising practices, internal and external student empowerment sessions, and the (7) Habits of Highly Effective College Students experience will be retained each academic year. 

Objective 2:  To ensure the University College activities and strategies have a positive impact on student performance and persistence by Target utilizing (5) assessments and evaluation results to document effectiveness each academic year.
