High Achieving Minority Students 
to Enter Med School as Sophomore Rocovich Scholars
GRAMBLING, La – December 10, 2019 – Today, Grambling State University announced the signing of a memorandum of under
standing (MOU) with Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) ensuring future opportunities for minority students to advance in the medical field.
“The need for exceptional doctors in medically underserved and rural communities like North Louisiana has been on a steady increase for many years. That’s a gap that our students can fill,” said Dr. Connie Walton, Grambling State’s Vice President of Academic Affairs and Provost. “This agreement is one of the many ways that Grambling State is equipping our students for the nation’s most in-demand career fields.”
Through the Rocovich Scholars Early Admission Program, VCOM aims to answer the issue of diminishing opportunities for medical training in rural parts of the country as well as the need for students of diverse backgrounds to access world class medical careers.
The articulation agreement will guarantee provisional admission to five students annually into the four-year Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) program at VCOM. Successful applicants from Grambling State must have a minimum GPA of 3.5 after completing all required pre-medical coursework, required community service and health care volunteer hours to be eligible for the guaranteed acceptance program. Grambling State students also will have access to an early acceptance program at the end of their second year and a Guaranteed Admissions Interview Program. This early acceptance program will allow them to matriculate to VCOM contingent upon meeting standards and completing all coursework toward graduation at Grambling State University.
