Gramblinite Staffers Win Journalism Awards at Southeast Journalism Conference

Smiles flooded The Gramblinite newsroom as Grambling State University’s student newspaper was awarded fourth place for the Best College Newspaper in the Best of the South competition at the Southeast Journalism Conference.

“I’m proud of our students, particularly because last spring we had no editor in chief. It was a group effort. Their hard work pays off,” said Wanda Peters, director of The Gramblinite.

Diana Sepulveda, a graduate student in sports administration, also had a reason to smile, as she was awarded first place in the Best Sports Writer category.

“It didn’t really hit me until I came in here, and I read all the judges’ comments. It doesn’t seem real, because I’ve won awards before, but it’s never been first place,” Sepulveda said.

Two more Gramblinite staffers also took home awards from the conference. Tierra Smith, a senior mass communications major, received eighth place in the Best News Writer category, and Nobel Michael, a senior mass communications major, received seventh place in the Best News Editorial Artist category.

GSU was one of 33 colleges who competed at the Southeast Journalism Conference. The winners were announced on February 27-28 in Atlanta.
