Greetings Class of 1967!
Fifty years ago, 1967 was a year to remember. The President of the United States was Lyndon B. Johnson and was putting in motion the “Great Society”, John McKeithen was governor of Louisiana. Ralph Waldo Emerson Jones was president of Grambling College. Racial Riots plagued many of the large cities. Daylight saving time was introduced. Stamps were $.05.The top movie was the ‘The Good, the Bad and the Ugly”. Gas cost $.33 per gallon, bread cost $.26 per loaf, the average wage was $7,300, and you officially became an alumnus of this great institution! Today, GSU President Richard Gallot and the Grambling State University family invite you to join us in celebrating your Golden Anniversary during the weekend of May 11th & 12th, 2017. This is a once in a lifetime commemorative event!
Grambling State University has made great strides in the last 50 years. We have continued to be widely recognized for the depth and integrity of the major academic programs. These programs include: Education, Business, Criminal Justice, two professional schools (Social Work and the Division of Nursing) and Master’s degrees in Nursing, Computer Science and Education which also offers the doctoral degree.
As of this writing GSU is again, not only on a secure academic track, but has brought football back to its former glory, We have won the Bayou Classic, SWAC Champion and on the 17th on our way to the Celebration Bowl in Atlanta GA. Meet our dynamic Coach Fobbs, a G man himself and our 10th President of Grambling State University, Richard Gallot! He too is a Grambling grad! The Class of 1967 will be his first GOLDEN GRADUATE CLASS. Be a part of history! You will have the opportunity to meet both of these fine Gramblinites that are pushing the university forward. We hope you will join us to experience the differences at GSU, reflect on the time you spent here, and be an integral part of the future.
As “Golden Graduates,” we have planned a fantastic 2-day event which will include touring of the campus, meet the coaches and other division heads, a luncheon with the President, and an old school social (see schedule of events attached where you can see yearbook pictures and listen to music from 1967 and remanence other events of that year. Muhammed Ali is stripped of his heavyweight title, Interactional marriage was no longer a crime, Otis Redding dies in a plane crash and other popular musicians at the time were The Supremes, Aretha Franklin. You will actively participate in the Torch Light ceremony and commencement exercises to receive the Golden 50-year diploma from President Gallot to commemorate your time here.
As is tradition with the previous 50th Anniversary classes, a monetary gift has been given. It is our hope that each graduate contribute to a gift for your University for scholarships. Surely just $10.00 a year for each year since your graduation is something to think about in deciding your gift. But of course whatever you decide the University will be very appreciative in these very trying times.
The enclosed information will offer details about the weekend, including registration information and a schedule of events. Please feel free to pass this information on to your fellow classmates. In the meantime, we are looking forward to seeing you this spring.
