Letter to Louisiana Legislative Auditor Concerning GSU Audit

University of Louisiana System Letterhead

November 9, 2012

Mr. Daryl Purpera
Louisiana Legislative Auditor
Post Office Box 94397
Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70804-9397

Dear Mr. Purpera:

We received the initial distribution of your June 30, 2012 audit of Grambling State University. As
requested by your office, we will maintain the confidentiality of this document until November 12,
2012.

On behalf of myself and the Board of Supervisors of the University of Louisiana System, I want to
thank you for your staff’s efforts and response to complete and issue this audit much earlier than was originally scheduled by your office. You might recall that earlier this year Grambling State University was placed on warning status by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). This warning was precipitated by findings in prior audit reports. The University had been informed by SACS that the current audit report needed to be completed and issued prior to the SACS’ meeting in early December. Accordingly, to be of value during the annual SACS meeting we were told that the report needed to be issued in early November.

In your issuance of this report this week, it is apparent that your staff addressed the release date
concerns of SACS and the University in revising staff schedules to get this audit completed. I want to jointly recognize the professional efforts of your staff and the University’s staff in accomplishing this most significant milestone.

Please extend my thanks to all of your audit staff that participated in this audit.

Sincerely,
Tom Layzell, Interim President
