Three-Time SWAC Champion, Coach Wilbert Ellis, to Keynote Eddie G. Robinson Lecture Series

ellis_coach100th Birthday Celebration Continues with Convocation Today at 11 a.m. 

GRAMBLING, La.  – November 11, 2019 – Grambling’s own legendary baseball coach, Wilbert Ellis, will keynote the Fourth Annual Edward G. Robinson Leadership Lecture Series on November 12 in the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center at 11 a.m. Coach Ellis is a Grambling State Baseball Hall of Famer and Southwestern Athletic Conference Alumni Lifetime Achievement Award recipient. 

“Coach Ellis is a true champion and his contributions to American sports and to Grambling State University are a beacon of what can be achieved with hard work and dedication,” said President Rick Gallot. “We are honored to have him share with our students and community.” 

Ellis coached the baseball team for 43 years, 17 years as an assistant coach and 26 as a head coach, ending an active career with a 745-462 record. He won eight SWAC divisional championships and three SWAC championships, and nearly 50 of his ball players signed major league contracts. Ellis was inducted into the baseball Hall of Fame in 2007, the SWAC Hall of Fame in 2011, the Grambling Legends Hall of Fame in 2012 and was chosen as the SWAC Baseball Coach of the Year seven times. Additionally, Ellis received the 2015 Robert E. Russell Award, the highest honor presented to a citizen in Lincoln Parish. 

The Eddie G. Robinson Lecture Series was founded by the Heritage Group to promote and extend the legacy of Coach Robinson. Campus and community members are invited to attend today’s convocation, themed “The Legacy Continues: Achieving Success Beyond the Football Field.”
