*Founded in 1938, the Speech & Theatre department began producing three to five shows per year on the campus. The University is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST) and has been a member in good standing since 1986. In 2011, the department became Visual & Performing Arts (VAPA) and incorporates art, dance, & theatre. The department continues to produce theatre headed by professionally experienced faculty who keep students front and center of all production areas: acting, directing, stage management, technical, and box office.

Our mission seeks to support the university’s mission in offering students a well-rounded liberal arts education. It is a major objective of the department to cultivate within our student majors & minors an artistic imagination, combined with integrated technical knowledge, and critical -thinking skills.

To this end, the department promotes innovation in acting, directing, playwriting, production, scenic design, lighting, costumes, dramatic literature, theatre history, and play analysis.
