English Department

The mission of the Department of English provides instruction in written communication and grammatical skills required by all academic disciplines, consistent with the university’s mission and philosophy. The department is dedicated to providing for the optimal development of each student’s skills in reading, writing, and reasoning especially for those students who have been adversely affected historically. To fulfill this goal, the department provides the student with exposure to aesthetic literature reflecting man’s hopes and aspiration, anxieties and frustrations, and successes or failures in all earthly endeavors. In this way, the department aspires to facilitate the student to become an independent and productive member of society. The department also seeks to insure the student’s mastery of English grammar, critical thinking, logical reasoning, and the use of information technology. The department’s curriculum encourages the maturation of good taste through aesthetic appreciation of literature. Above all, the department seeks to develop those job skills that students must have to function effectively in the global marketplace.
