GSU Student-Athletes Competing In the Classroom

Grambling, LA – Not only are the student-athletes at Grambling State University competing on the field of play, but they are also consistently among the top students performing in the classroom as well. Of the 315 total number of student-athletes attending GSU for the 2015 Fall Semester, 135 (42%) earned a semester grade point average of at least 3.00 or better. The breakout of individual sports includes: 40 (football), 23 (women’s track), 16 (men’s track), 6 (men’s basketball), 6 (women’s basketball), 18 (baseball), 1 (bowling), 4 (tennis), 9 (softball), 2 (volleyball), and 10 (soccer). Five of the nine student-athletes that earned 4.0 GPA’s were freshmen while 101 have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 and higher. In terms of classification, 32 seniors, 31 juniors, 27 sophomores, and 37 freshman student-athletes earned a 3.00 and higher.

Coach Fobbs was especially pleased to learn that 40 (50%) of the 2015 Tiger Football Team earned a GPA of 3.00. “I am extremely proud of my guys not only did we have a phenomenal and remarkable season on the field our guys are excelling off the field in the classroom as well.” The GSU men’s 2015 SWAC Champions cross-country team Coach Bertram Lovell noted that “This is our ultimate goal and that is not just winning on the track but winning in life and we all want championships but the biggest reward is walking across that stage.”

This is an expectation of all student-athletes at Grambling State University notes Dr. LaWanda Sykes who serves Director of Academic Enhancement for Athletics. They are reminded that they are students first and foremost and then an athlete second. With our university coming out of the penalty phase dealing with APR (Academic Progress Rate) sanctions this is a great way avoiding going back into any penalty phases. We will continue to guide and help these student-athletes excel in the classroom so they can excel on the field, court, etc. and continue to make Grambling State University proud.
