Strategic Planning Sessions Moving Forward

Grambling, LA – When Dr. Willie Larkin became President of Grambling State University 9 months ago, he promised complete transparency. As a part of his commitment and promise to Grambling University constituents, Larkin established a Strategic Planning Committee early fall, 2015. The committee was charged with developing goals that would enhance the university.

The chair of the Strategic Planning Committee was Dr. Anthony Johnson, associate vice president for academic affairs. Dr. Johnson and the steering committee in consultation with Dr. Maurice Taylor, Vice President for Academic Outreach and Engagement for Morgan State University developed the framework for the strategic planning process. Dr. Taylor completed a comprehensive review of the University using various documents and by conducting his own research about the University.

In February, Dr. Anthony Johnson left the position of associate vice president for academic affairs and chair of the Strategic Planning Committee to pursue other opportunities. President Larkin appointed Dr. Adriel Hilton and Dr. Ellen Smiley as co-chairs of the Strategic Planning Committee. Dr. Hilton and Dr. Smiley immediately developed a video that drew attention to the Strategic Planning Process and alerted constituents that their input is encouraged.

On March 31, members of the faculty, staff, student body, alumni, foundation, and community leaders came together for a series of workshops to discuss Grambling State University’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. The sessions were facilitated by Dr. Smiley and Dr. Hilton. In addition, the groups outlined a number of core values associated with the University. The data was categorized and placed in a document that will be presented on April 8, 2016 during the next open planning session for the Strategic Plan. The session will be conducted by Dr. Maurice Taylor. After April 8, the committee will began developing drafts of the Strategic Plan for review. The final document will be available by May 31, 2016 for implementation. One of our goals is to ensure that Grambling State University remains Ready for the Challenge.
