Grambling State University’s Hilton Receives Coveted Harry Canon Award from the American College Personnel Association

Grambling, LA – Adriel A. Hilton received the 2016 Harry Canon Outstanding Professional Award from the Standing Committee on Men and Masculinities of the American College Personnel Association (ACPA) during its annual convention in Montreal. Hilton currently serves as Executive Assistant to the President and Chief of Staff at Grambling State University.

ACPA supports and fosters college student learning through the generation and dissemination of knowledge, which informs policies, practices and programs for student affairs professionals and the higher education community. The purpose of the convention is to connect professionals and engage them in discussions of cultural, global, and contemporary issues within the higher education arena. ACPA has 7,500 members representing 1,200 private and public institutions from across the U.S. and around the world. Membership includes graduate and undergraduate students enrolled in student affairs/higher education administration programs, faculty, and student affairs professionals from entry level to senior student affairs officers. In 2012, the ACPA Governing Board adopted a Globalization Plan to further expand and deepen the Association’s commitment to prepare higher education professionals for their daily work. This year’s conference was further evidence of ACPA’s international approach to research, scholarship and practice to benefit its members and students.

A noted author and presenter, Grambling State University’s Dr. Hilton has numerous publications and proceedings to his credit. Some of his research is published in refereed journals such as Teachers College Record, Journal of College Student Development, Community College Review, Community College Journal of Research and Practice, Journal of Applied Research in the Community College, and the Journal of the Professoriate. Membership on the editorial board of the Journal of Negro Education is among his numerous service commitments.

Dr. Hilton holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration (finance) from Morehouse College, Atlanta, GA; a master’s of applied social science (public administration emphasis) from Florida A&M University, Tallahassee, FL; and a PhD in higher education (administration) from Morgan State University, Baltimore, MD. His award-winning dissertation and research was titled, “The Perceptions of Administrators Concerning the One Florida Initiative.”
