The mission of the Department of Accounting is to provide students with the foundation that will allow them to understand and utilize principles, policies, and theories that govern the field of accounting. Emphasis is on development of problem-solving skills, effective communication, and the knowledge and use of technology as it relates to the profession. The focus of the curriculum is to provide students with the background for careers in public, private, or governmental accounting as well as advanced study.
The Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Accounting will be awarded to students who complete the 120 hour semester hour program in Accounting and meet the University and College of Business requirements for graduation.
The department offers various activities aimed at involving the students and exposing them to the various career opportunities in accounting. They include a NABA (National Association of Black Accountants) student chapter which sponsors field trips, resume-writing seminars, interview skills workshops, and peer counseling.
Campus visits by former graduates in management are frequent to supply students with a real-world orientation to corporate America. Students are assigned individual faculty advisors and are encouraged to visit with them regularly.
