Department of Theatre Arts

Mission

The mission of the Department of Visual and Performing Art is to provide an undergraduate degree in Visual and Performing Arts with a concentration in either, Dance, Theatre, or Visual Art. This is accomplished with a faculty committed to excellence in teaching, scholarship, creative activities and service. The curriculum is designed to develop the knowledge, the theories and the skills needed to be accomplished in the either of the fields. A full program of productions in Dance, Theatre, or Visual Art is offered. The broad preparation at the undergraduate level develops a foundation for the various areas of concentration. The department strives to help students acquire and develop the tools they will need in or to succeed in their future pursuits. The Department of Visual and Performing arts has and continues to demonstrate an ongoing connection, rapport, and reciprocity with the community. Our mission is to educate and entertain our community; thereby enriching the cultural life. The community maintains an appreciation for and an understanding of the department’s inherent goals. These goals include aesthetic exposure for the public, educating the masses, and strengthening the program. Our mission is to enrich, educate and entertain our community, thereby enriching the cultural life.

Welcome to the Department of Theatre Arts' web page at Grambling State University! We are delighted that you have taken the time to view our site. This year marks our 69th season of theatrical production and educating young minds to the wonders of theatre. We are proud of the legacy and history of the Department of Speech and Theatre here at Grambling State University. Ours is a history guided by principals of honor and truth. We hold fast to the philosophy of our founder, the late Dr. Floyd L. Sandle, who always reminded us that our responsibility in this department was and is to create artists and not merely entertainers.

Dr. Sandle’s message resonates today in our guiding theme: “Preparing Well- Rounded Scholars, Creative Artists, Leaders, and Service Providers.” The Educational Theatre, particularly that of the Historically Black Institution, has provided training and experiences beyond what might be considered the normal scope for students from many diverse backgrounds. Grambling State University has been at the very pinnacle of educational theatre since its evolution.

As we approach our reaffirmation of accreditation by the National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST), and as we embark upon a new page in the annuals of our history at Grambling State University, we invite your continued support in helping the Department of Speech and Theatre touch in a very meaningful way the lives of all mankind. We, especially, want to continue to mold the talents of those young minds who endeavor to bring the printed page to life through their craft.

Sincerely,
Head, Department of Theatre Arts
