Safety Update: On-Campus Incident, October 18, 2019

In the early morning of October 18, 2019, at approximately 1:30 AM, Grambling State University authorities responded to an in-door firearm discharge at the Frederick C. Hobdy Assembly Center on Grambling State University’s campus. Two (2) individuals, one non-student and one police officer, were transported to North Louisiana Medical Center to receive care for injuries. Officers on the scene report that witnesses report a suspect fled campus following the discharge event. An active investigation under this incident continues under the jurisdiction and leadership of the Louisiana State Police Department. Anyone who has any details related to the incident is encouraged to call (318) 274-2222.

Grambling State Hires New Chief of Police, Jerry Melton

Veteran Officer and Security Professional to Lead University Police Department 


GRAMBLING, LA — October 3, 2019 – Today, Grambling State University officials announced Jerry Melton has been appointed the institution’s new Chief of the University Police Department, taking over for the Interim Chief Dr. Quentin Holmes who will continue to support the Division of Operations as Special Assistant for Campus Safety.  


“I’ve always admired the excellence exhibited by GSU students,” said Chief Melton. “I am committed to ensuring that each and every student has a positive and safe experience on our growing campus.”

The hands and hearts of the Grambling State University community go out to our staff, students, and neighbors at Louisiana Tech in response to this week’s severe weather events. We will work closely with Dr. Guice and his team to assess and respond to the coming needs of our students and campuses. Our impacted students and staff are encouraged to remain in close contact with their supervisors and faculty to let us know how we can best support during this challenging time. CAUTION – FLOOD ALERT: Grambling State University & Surrounding Areas

Grambling State University’s campus and surrounding areas are currently experiencing severe rains and flooding. For safety emergencies, please call (318) 274-2222. Follow for updates.

As inclement weather is expected to continue through Sunday night, students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to avoid high-water areas and remain alert when driving; especially when approaching submerged roadways.

Please note that travel is strongly discouraged in the following areas on campus due to excessive flooding:  

RWE Jones Highway (between Central Avenue and College Avenue)

Cole Street (between RWE Jones HWY and Ballock Street)

College Avenue (areas west of Main Street)
